Gutter guards for York, Pennsylvania homes

Leaves in the gutters every fall, ice in them every winter? One call connects York County homeowners with a local gutter company that can fix it.

Brick row homes in York with gold gutters, mesh guards and a maple dropping leaves Three attached red-brick row homes with front porches stand on a York street in autumn. Rolling farm fields and a barn sit on the hills behind them. A large maple drops orange leaves that rest on fine mesh guards over the gutters while rain runs down a downspout into an extension at the curb.

Who calls us?

Homeowners across York County: the city's row homes and twins, older borough houses in Hanover, Red Lion and Shrewsbury, and newer subdivisions in the townships. Most are dealing with one of a few problems. Gutters fill with leaves every fall. Water pours over the edge in summer storms. Ice packs into the gutters in winter. Or the boards behind the gutters have gone soft and the gutters won't stay put.

Why do York gutters work so hard?

Because of the rain, the trees and the winters. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put York at about 46.5 inches of precipitation a year, more than Harrisburg's roughly 41 inches. That water falls over about 127 days, so gutters are working most weeks of the year. Mature maples, oaks and sycamores shade the older streets, and newer neighborhoods in the townships back up to tree lines. Then winter brings repeated freezes and thaws that punish any gutter still holding water or leaves.

Will gutter guards end gutter cleaning?

Not completely. A good guard keeps leaves, seeds and twigs out of the trough and the downspouts, which is the hard part to clean. Pollen, shingle grit and needles can still collect on top, and roof valleys gather the most. Plan on a quick brush-off or rinse now and then rather than climbing up to scoop out packed gutters twice a year.

What kinds of guards are there?

  • Stainless micro-mesh. Fine mesh on a rigid frame. Stops needles and maple seeds and is the usual pick under evergreens.
  • Perforated metal and screens. Lower cost and fine for broad leaves, but small debris gets through.
  • Hood covers. Water curves around a rounded edge while leaves slide off. Visible from the street and can overshoot in a heavy downpour.
  • Foam and brush inserts. Do-it-yourself products that sit in the trough, trap debris and wear out sooner.

Signs your gutters need attention

  • Water sheeting over the front edge in storms
  • Peeling paint or soft spots on fascia boards
  • Icicles and ice packed in the gutters
  • Washed-out mulch under the roofline
  • A wet basement after heavy rain
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away

Do gutter guards stop ice dams?

No, and anyone who says they do is overselling. Ice dams form when heat leaking into the attic melts snow on the roof, and that water refreezes at the colder eaves. Attic insulation and ventilation are the real fix. What guards do is keep the gutters free of leaves, so when meltwater does reach them, it has an open path to the downspouts.

Can guards go on my existing gutters?

Often, if the gutters are sound, sloped toward their outlets and fastened to solid fascia. If they leak at many seams, sag or sit on rotted wood, guards only cover up the problem. In that case the better plan is usually repairs or new seamless gutters first, with guards added in the same visit.

Does a gutter contractor have to register in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act requires contractors who do at least $5,000 of home improvement work a year to register with the Attorney General's Office. Home improvement contracts over $500 must be in writing and include the total price, estimated start and finish dates, a description of the work and notice of your right to cancel within three days. You can verify a registration on the Attorney General's free lookup. The York County gutter guide has more on hiring and permits.

Is this a gutter company?

No. York Gutter Guards is a referral service. We pass your call or request to an independent gutter company that works near you, and that company quotes, installs and stands behind its own work. Read our hiring tips before you sign anything.
